I need to implement an Hyper-v guest VM Hardware Level 8 inside an ESXi 5.1 or 5.5 host.

Is it possible?

Diffent blogs say different things...

Can anybody please provide or point a step-by-step guide?

nested ESXi using NSX: mac learning

I'm thinking to build an environment with some physical hosts 6.0 with NSX 6.2. Inside those hosts i need to nest some vsphere labs.

I see into the NSX > NEW LOGICAL SWITCH gui that I can enable MAC LEARNING for the logical switch so I guess that using the NSX logical switch I can setup a nested environment without using the PROMISCUOUS MODE on my phisical environment.

Any experience or idea ?

Nested Server 2012 R2 error - "hypervisor is not running"

$

Good afternoon,

I am having some issues starting a virtual machine inside my server 2012 R2 VM. I have search around the internet for a while finding several articles and forums on how to set up nested visualization including the official document on these forums but i am still having trouble.

My setup:

Physical host running - ESXI 5.5 1623387

Physcial machine - dell R720 (2x e5-2690 - supports VT-X and EPT and it is turned on in the BIOS, esxcfg confirms with "3")

VM - Server 2012 R2, fresh install, VM version 9 (vmx-09 created by web console)

I have added / tried every config option that i have found:

- I created the VM through the web console and checked "expose hardware assisted virtualization to the guest OS"

- I ensured that vhv.enable = "TRUE" in the vmx config

- I have tried adding hypervisor.cpuid.v0 = "FALSE" to the vmx config

- I have tried adding vhv.allow in addition to vhv.enable in the /etc/vmware/config but neither made a difference (found out it wasn't needed later on through a post on this forum)

- I have tried setting the guestOS name to "winhyperv" in the .vmx file

- I have tried setting the guestOS type to "ESXi 5.x" in the thick client

- I have set the cpu/mmu virtualiztion tick to the last one

- I have tried setting the level 1 ecx values as seen here

- I have ensured that monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware"

- I have uninstalled the hyper-v role and reinstalled it after making these changes to no avail

- I have tried another ESXi 5.5 1331820 host with these setting and it doesn't work (VT-X confirmed as well)

- I have tried server 2016 instead of 2012 R2  and it doesn't work

I think that is about all the things i have tried. I'm sure i have probably missed something very obvious but any help would be appreciated.

This specific virtual machine has not generated a vmware.log file but another one of my test vms ( with the same exact issues on the second physical host) has generated a couple and i am attaching one of them and more can be supplied if needed.

Thanks!

VMware Server 2.0 inside a guest VM running on ESXi 5.5

I have a client who is currently running a physical server (Windows Server 2008R2) which I will call ServerA, and is running VMware Server 2.0 to run a small Windows Server 2003 VM within the physical server, which I will call ServerB.  The application software running on this 2003 server (ServerB) cannot yet be upgraded to a newer OS, or so I'm being told.  The client is wondering if he could move ServerA away from a physical server and onto a guest VM in an ESXi 5.5 cluster.  So the idea would be to have ServerA become a 2008R2 VM (since I do not believe VMware Server 2.0 will install on a 2012 OS), and then have VMware Server 2.0 running on the new guest VM ServerA.  The VMware Server 2.0 virtualization would then have the 2003 ServerB guest running.

Logically it would be something like this:  ESXi 5.5 host cluster -> VM guest running on ESXi cluster with guest OS 2008R2 -> VMware Server 2.0 installed on guest OS 2008R2-> VM guest running on VMware Server 2.0 with guest OS 2003

Will this work?

Nested Hyper-V underf Windows Server 2016 TP 4 - can't boot the VM

Hi:

VMware WS 11.1.3 Host Windows 10.

Windows 2016 Server 2016 runs great in a VM (even on a nested ESi 6 server VM).  However when I tried to install the Hyper-V role and rebooted the machine did not go past the the Windows logo  (not even the circular progress circle.  I had defined this machine as a Windows 2012 Server. Enabled the processor virtualization option of course.  I tried a few things but none worked.  Changed OS type to hyper-v (unsupported) - no luck.  Changed OS type to Windows 10- x64 and added to vmx file.

hypervisor.cpuid.v0 = “FALSE"

mce.enable = “TRUE”

Actually I got a "dictionary" error or vmx corrupted msg in that case.

Fortunately I can just download the working 2016 VM from my physical ESXi and try again if I had a clue as to what I could do.

Has anybody gotten nested Hyper-V to work under a Windows Server 2016 VM?

VMware player conflict with VMware tools on guest system

I am running VMware Player 12 on the host. If I install VMware player 7 on the guest it conflicts with VMware tools on the guest and show "vmci.sys incorrect version" error. I can't install VMware 12 on the guest because it is 32 bit operation system. What should I do? Is the only option to not use VMware tools on guest?

Does VMware Workstation allow NIC Teaming inbound with a virtual switch in Hyper-V?

Hi jmattson !!!!.

I have a question.

I have a nested Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V as virtual machine on VMware Workstation 10.0.0 buil-1295980.

I created a NIC Team (2 NICs) in my Hyper-V. It works fine.

I need to create virtual NICs bound to that NIC Teaming becasue I am preparing an environment about network converged, but in Hyper-V.

However, when I create a Virtual Switch External bounded to the NIC Team from Hyper-V Manager, my Hyper-V loses network connectivity.

As soon as the NIC Team is unbinded from the virtual switch or if the virtual switch is deleted, the Hyper-V connects. Therefore, the NIC Team works fine.

Does VMware Workstation allow NIC Teaming inbound with a virtual switch in Hyper-V?. Or any workaround?

If your answer is negative. I can upgrade to VMware Workstation 12 Pro. Does VMware Workstation 12 Pro support my question?

Plese, help me :).

Thank you for your response !!.

Klem.

Hi All,

I have ESXi 5.5 running and on top of ESXi VM with windows 7 (2 vCPU / 16 GB RAM / 160 GB HDD) . The VM is enabled with Nested (Hardware Virtualization - Expose hardware assisted virtualization to the guest OS) on CPU.

My Question is by enabling Nested VM do i have performance issues on the ESXi , If yes is there a way to resolve it?

Thanks in Advance.

You are running VMware ESX through an incompatible hypervisor. You cannot power on a virtual machine until this hypervisor is disabled.

"You are running VMware ESX through an incompatible hypervisor. You cannot power on a virtual machine until this hypervisor is disabled."

I have tried everything . I am not getting  this entry mx.allowNested = TRUE for my VM .vmx file

qemu/kvm inside ESXi - virtual lab networking

Hi all,

I'm working on a virtual networking lab leveraging ESXi nested virtualization technology. Host is a Cisco UCS server based on dual socket Intel Xeon E5-2690 equipped with 128 GB RAM and running ESXi 6.0. Basically ESXi 6.0 supports a VM (16 vCPU, 64GB RAM assigned) running unetlab software. Internally unetlab, based on linux 64-bit kernel, supports multiple VMs (each of them implementing a network node - basically a "router") leveraging QEMU/KVM technology.

To enable Virtualized Hardware-Assisted Virtualization (VHV) for the VM running on ESXi I set vhv.enable = "true" in the .vmx configuration file.

nested VM instances running router OS have problems when multiple-vcpu are assigned to them (basically OS crash and try to reboot). No issues seen however when configured to run with just 1 vcpu assigned.

Note that when unetlab runs on bare metal server no issue is seen even with multiple vcpus assigned to router VMs running on top QEMU/KVM.

Any idea to troubleshoot the issue above ?

thanks for your help !

Crashes on ESXi6.0 nested on to of ESXi5.5 after migration

$

We are seeing a number of crashes, either "#PF Exception 14"   or "Recursive Panics w/ VSCSI timeouts"  on the ESXi 6.0 hosts running in VMs in on 5.5 VMs (VM Version 9).

In 5 out of 5 cases I looked at, there was a VM migration slightly before the crash.    I'm guessing that the 6.0 host has short I/O timeouts for swapping, etc., and those are not met on migration.

Is there any way to reduce the frequency of these events?

Thanks

PS I've also observed these messages just before some of the crashes, and I couldn't find any references to this message anywhere.

Enabling user world core dumps during boot

$

Hi,

I have a process that crashes early during boot time and I'd like to generate a core dump to understand the crash.

Normally, when the system is already running, I do the following:

- SSH into the machine, then type

/sbin/vsish -e set /userworld/global/coreDumpEnabled 1

- Next time a process crashes, /var/core will contain the coredumps

- Decompress core dump with vmkdump_extract test-zdump.000

Unfortunately, the vsish command does not seem to persist changes across reboots.

How can this be solved to get coredumps during boot?

Thanks for your help!
