FT not working

Hi,

I am setting up a vSphere lab environment which consists of two ESXi hosts and a free nas storage VM,  deployed on a VMware workstation.

While trying to configure FT I am getting errors. Haven't anybody tested FT in such an  environment ? I have been told by somebody that FT doesn't work in a workstation lab environment. Is that  correct ?

Installing ESXi in VMware Workstation

Hi.

I am trying to install ESXi 5.5 but during the installation ESXi doesn't see the internal HDD. (I am trying to install it on a VMware Workstation machine)

I have search on the internet for possible causes and for solutions (couldn't find any(Solutions)).

So i what i want to know:

Is it possible to install ESXi as a Virtual Machine.

If it's possible what do i need to do to make it work?.

What i tried so far:

Installing it on a Exsisting Vmware machine (Windows 2008 R2 x64).

Installing it on a New VMware machine (no pre OS installation)

Tried to modify the BIOS.

I hope someone can help me out!.

"XP mode" inside a Windows 7 guest VM

I am not sure thist is the right forum for my question. If it isn't, please direct me to the right one.

Can I create a Windows 7 guest VM on an ESXI host and, inside the Windows 7 guest VM, activate "XP Mode" (that is a Windows XP VM managed by a Microsoft Virtual PC Hypervisor)?

Is there any requirement for the ESXi host and/or the Windows 7 guest VM?

Network adapter for ESXi 5.5 on Workstation 10

I have an ESXi 5.5 guest hypervisor running on an ESXi 5.5 host hypervisor. I used vCenter Standalone Converter 5.5.2 to convert the guest hypervisor to a VMWare Workstation VM (v10).

Now the network adapter is not recognised by the ESXI 5.5 guest hypervisor running in Workstation 10. Specifically the error is “No compatible network adapter found. Please consult the products Hardware Compatibility Guide (HCG) for a list of supported adapters”. The networking on the guest hypervisor running on the ESXi 5.5 host hypervisor is working fine.

I tried removing the adapter and recreating it in Workstation, and there aren't that many settings in VMWare Workstation for network adapters so I don't know what I could be doing wrong there.

Notes:

  • I originally had the guest ESXi running on Workstation 10 normally (networking all worked) and I actually used the standalone converter to put it up on the host ESXi in the first place. So from my perspective I basically just uploaded it and then downloaded it again and the network adapter stopped working - though I'm sure it's more complicated than that.
  • I added vhv.enable = "true" to the vmx file both times after converting the VM.
  • I enabled "Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI" in the processor settings.
  • On the guest ESXi that's running on the host ESXi I had the network set to be promiscuous, but I don't think I can do that yet on the Workstation one because the guest ESXi can't even see the network adapter at this stage.

Promious mode is enabled in the esx host.

Checked the Virtaulized mode is enabled in Bios

I already checked there is the discussion in the vmware community notified to edit the config file in the esx host

/etc/vmware/config = vhv.enabled = true

then i edited the vmx file of the the win08 64 bit also

CPUid

guest os = "kernel5"

then i power on the win2008 64 bit VM in the VMWare Workstation 8

it's same booting then error occur i recreated more than 20 VM's today itself booted mutiple os/2  WIn2012,Win2008R2,Win07,Win3200364bit.

Have anybody tested a similar confnguration?

How should I confngure my guest ESXi VM?

VMware Workstation vs. ESXi for nested virtualization?

$

Although I have my thoughts on the subject, I'd like to hear what others have to say. What are the pros and cons of using Workstation vs. ESXi for running nested ESXi and VMs inside for home lab purposes? What would you chose now if you were to rebuild your lab from the scratch (to simplify it: ESXi 5.5 or Workstation 10?)

Will award points for helpful/best answers.

Thanks

Shared storage issue

I made some test using Virtual PC on my PC and I was able to nest 2 ESXi gests and a shared stoarage based on either a FreeNas or a Nas4Free virtual NAS.

I was able to use either iSCSI and NFS datastores.

Now I have the opportunity to use an HP ML350 host with a lot of RAM running ESXi 5.5 U2 free version.

I can easily create my ESXi guest VMs but I am unable to make them use a shared storage, neither based on iSCSI or NFS.

I attempted to use 2 vSwitches but ESXi (virtual) guests are unable to access neither iSCSI or NFS shared storage.

My (virtual) NAS looks to work fin e as I can access either iSCSI and NFS shares from a Windows VM.

Is there any guideline to configure the ESXi virtual hosts and/or the vSwitch for shared storage?

I would like to use a dedicated vSwitch not connected to any physical NIC to avoid NFS or iSCSI traffic in my main LAN.

Is there anything I should consider?

VM Guests can't see beyond Bridge Network

My nested ESXi seems to works ok. Is able to to pick up office DHCP.

vmnet0 mode is set to Bridge as I want its VM guests to use the office DHCP ips.

Humm DHCP boot request does not work for guest VMs. So set them to static. Is able to ping other VMs within the nested ESxi. But can't ping beyond.

I'm using Workstation 9(running on Ubuntu 12.4). Using ESXi 5.1.

I've done a simlar install that worked. i.e. Workstation 8(windows 8). Used ESXi with bridge mode. Guest VMs can pick up office DHCPs ok.

This was using a different DHCP server, CPU and NIC.

Any ideas?

The ESXi 5.5 VM cannot ping the Hyper-V Host and the Windows 2012R2 VM.

It makes no sense to me why the 2012 VM can ping both the host and the router and the ESXi VM only the router.

Does anyone know a solution to this issue?, as I am clueless.

EDIT 01-dec-2014 13:50      I already tried the things described in https://communities.vmware.com/message/2441159#2441159 , but not the solution for my issue.

EDIT 01-dec-2014 22:00

HyperV Host has the firewall disabled for all interfaces (i know, not best practice, but its a lab environement )

There is no duplicate mac address.

Unloaded the firewall and enabled promiscuous mode using the ESXi Shell:

     > esxcli network firewall unload

     > esxcli network vswitch standard policy security set --allow-promiscuous y -v vSwitch0

Both commands executed succesfully, but did not solve the "not pinging" issue.

The HyperV does have an ARP cache entry for the MAC Address of the ESXi VM, so it does recognise it at that level

.98 is the HyperV Host, .249 is the ESXi VM.

========= BEGIN ARP RESULT ==========

PS C:\Users\Administrator> arp -a 192.168.1.249

  192.168.1.249         00-15-5d-01-64-f1     dynamic

========= END ARP RESULT ==========

========= BEGIN PING RESULT =========

PS C:\Users\Administrator> ping 192.168.1.249

Just to make sure, I added the follwing line in the XML file of the ESXi VM (added line is in bold text)

  <global_settings>

Bridged networking not working with nested VMware Workstation

$

I am having an issue that I can't seem to find any answer to....

We are running Vsphere 5.5 and I have 2 Guests each running Windows 7 64-bit.  Each of these guests has VMware Workstation 10 running on them.  When we P2V the systems we followed all the instructions to allow nested VMware Workstation.  However, we are running into an issue where the Bridged Networking will not work.  Both of the Win7 guests are on the same vlan and all of the VMs in Workstation are on the same network as well.  However, while the 2 Windows 7 guests can ping each other and each of the guests can ping the VMs that are hosted locally, they cannot connect to the systems on the other guest running workstation.

I tried to upgrade the Guest NIC to VMXNet3, but that did not help.

All of the research I have done brings me to people who are having the opposite problem (ESXi nested in VMware Workstation).

How can I get the 2 bridged networks to connect?

Thanks!
